What Are Skin Tags?

Skin tags are scientifically known as acrochordons, or sometimes fibroepithelial polyps. You may just know them as a nuisance. They are soft, benign, flesh-colored skin growths that appear on the body, sometimes on stalks, and commonly in the region of the eyes, neck, armpits, skin folds around the genitals or buttocks, or under breasts. Almost everyone will get one or more in their lifetime, and obese, middle-aged people are the most prone to them. It has been scientifically observed that they are more common during pregnancy. They are not warts, moles, or liver spots. Nor are they a sign of skin cancer, the overwhelming majority of the time. There are multiple methods that are advertised to get rid of skin tags.

Are Skin Tags Expensive to Remove?

Removal of skin tags is typically seen as a cosmetic procedure by health insurance companies. They rarely cover the cost of removal, though some will at least pay for them to be identified as such by a dermatologist or other professional. Some methods include cutting off with sterile scissors, scalpels, or specialist tools that resemble nail clippers. Alternatively, freezing kits that use liquid nitrogen are used by some service providers. Some people use over-the-counter kits to remove skin tags at home. However, doctors recommend against using removal creams that incorporate salicylic acid, tea tree oil or other essential oils. Treatments which use these can cause skin irritation and even contact dermatitis in cases of sensitive skin. Contact dermatitis can take up to a month to clear up.

How Do You Remove a Skin Tag ASAP?

LV Aesthetic can help you remove skin tags with a procedure called ThermoClear. This technology was developed by manufacturers with a generation of pedigree in the field of medical spa tech development. The apparatus treats a range of skin irregularities, improving their appearance. It’s a fast-acting solution to issues such as skin tags.

ThermoClear uses low-frequency energt to target the topmost layers of skin (the epidermis), unlike comparable treatments such as laser or IPL, which penetrate deeper into the skin thereby necessitating longer periods of recovery and potentially leading to further complications such as hypopigmentation or hyperpigmentation.

Skin Care and Skin Tag Removal

There’s some important skin care advice we give to all our clients who undergo ThermoClear treatment for skin tags. Everyone who receives the treatment will experience a little irritation or discomfort in the treated area for a few hours. This is generally followed by a slight case of scabbing and crusting for around 1-4 weeks. However, these side effects can be mitigated with good aftercare. Here is what we generally suggest:

  • Don’t put pressure on the treated area, and avoid rubbing it.

  • Avoid very hot or very cold temperatures.

  • No tanning, exercising, saunas, or swimming pools for at least 48 hours. Similarly, keep the area covered or away from prolonged direct sunlight or hypopigmentation/hyperpigmentation may occur. Cover the area with a broad spectrum sunscreen for 12 weeks after treatment.

  • No makeup on the affected area for at least 24 hours.

  • When washing the area, cleanse with a mild cleanser and a little cool water. Pat the area dry but do not rub.

  • Cleanse the area twice a day, and when the area is dry, apply the aftercare. The aftercare should not be necessary after the initial 24 hours unless suggested.

  • Do not scratch or pick at the area. Don’t remove the scabbing.

  • Cut down on smoking while you’re healing: it affects the ability of blood vessels to supply blood to your skin and expedite the healing process.

Skin tags take between three and four weeks to heal. We recommend using either Bacitracin or PolySporin cream on the treated area to prevent infection after treatment.
